Concert Review: Grand Funk Railroad

I knew very little about Grand Funk Railroad until I saw Mark Farner on an episode of That Metal Show. He seemed like just the nicest guy in the world, but I didn't really remember much about the episode until I saw that Grand Funk Railroad was coming to town. Remembering the nice interview, I planned to go.

I remembered that Grand Funk Railroad once sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles.

I forgot, however, that Mark Farner is no long in Grand Funk Railroad.

Oops.

According to Farner, the other two guys in the band have kicked him out, despite Farner having written many of their songs.

But the show was quite enjoyable despite that. I was too far away from the stage to even realize it wasn't Farner, and the new singer, Max Carl, was fantastic. His vocals were really excellent, and his stage presence was great too.

They stuck to their greatest hits for the most part, and all sounded good enough for 60 year old guys. Songs like "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain", and even enjoyable covers like "The Loco-Motion".

Anyway, it was sad to not see Farner, but it was an enjoyable show all the same. If you get the chance, go check them out!
